This stunning work of contemporary art is hand forged of house-made, triple-alloy damascus steel to create a three-tone pattern that cascades from the voluptuous integral handle bolster to the blade’s needle-like tip. A master of compound bevels, Charlie first forges the blade to shape, then gives each side of the symmetrical profile his superb ‘S-grind’ geometry that includes silky, nearly unnoticeable transitions from flat, to concave, to convex sections, altogether resulting in precise details focused squarely on cutting performance and food release. The rounded spine of the blade has a steady taper to a sharp and thin tip made to excel at precision slicing and detail work, making this knife powerful and capable of the toughest cuts, without sacrificing finesse and sophistication. Just in front of the the blade-to-bolster transition is the knife’s balance point, giving it a nimble, steady feel on the cutting board. For comfort and control, Charlie expertly moves metal with fire and pressure to finish the handle bolster in a way that shows the damascus pattern in a new and mesmerizing light. Damascus steel then gives way, with stepped, museum fit-up, to a sculpted piece of black Richlite that frames a striking piece of quilted ash. A matching piece of quilted ash caps the handle’s hidden retention bolt at the handle’s carved rear face. Outstanding and innovative work from one of the best.
