Editor’s Notes
A beautifully crafted hand-cut crystal decanter, featuring a matching numbered stopper and carafe — a hallmark of traditional European glassmaking.
Each decanter and stopper in fine crystal production was individually ground and polished by hand to ensure a perfect fit. Because no two were identical, artisans etched small matching numbers onto both pieces to keep them paired through every stage of finishing and inspection. These marks — often discreetly placed near the stopper base or beneath the neck — reflect the meticulous care and precision of old-world craftsmanship.
Far from being serial numbers, these subtle etchings signify that the stopper was custom-fitted to its exact decanter, ensuring an airtight seal, visual harmony, and the clarity that defines high-quality crystal.
A timeless detail and a quiet testament to the artisan’s hand behind every flawless curve and gleam.
