Editor’s notes
These dining chairs are a striking example of Czechoslovak mid-century modern design, created in the 1960s by Antonín Šuman for the renowned manufacturer Tatra Nábytok.
Defined by their sculptural presence, the chairs feature a bold bentwood backrest formed into an elegant open arch, combining visual lightness with ergonomic support. The curved back contrasts beautifully with the tapered solid wood legs, while the upholstered seat adds comfort and warmth to the design.
Rooted in the strong Czech bentwood tradition and influenced by Scandinavian and post-war European modernism, these chairs balance functionality, expressive form, and industrial craftsmanship. Designed for everyday use, they reflect the refined yet practical approach characteristic of Eastern European design during the socialist era.
Timeless and distinctive, these chairs work equally well in mid-century interiors, contemporary dining spaces, or eclectic settings, where their sculptural silhouettes can be fully appreciated.
